As the new year begins, it's the same old in the forecast for the Upper Midwest, meteorologist Andrew Whitmyer says. Snow and cold appear likely to stay away, at least for the next couple weeks.

Generally dry conditions have settled into most of the region for the past few months or longer, and that isn't going to change in the immediate future, Whitmyer says. While there are small chances of scattered snow in the forecast, big storms aren't likely.

Likewise, the serious cold also is expected to stay away. Cooler weather may come, but frigid arctic air isn't anticipated.
